Stories | Every man is mortal, but some are less so!

Posted by Jitesh Pillaai | Filmfare Editor

A Golden Boy loses his sheen. A sensation stops being one. Or so we are told. So the naysayers who have nothing better to talk about once the Friday releases stop attracting attention. The man who brought India an Oscar award or two, who revolutionized the way Indian film music is made, and whom producers still queue in line for to meet. And yet, because of what he gives us, and because of the quality he made us get adjusted to, a lesser offering from A.R. Rahman is enough to get the tongues wagging and the keyboards rattling.  And it is ironic that he unintentionally, subliminally, contributes to this air. He remains as unassuming an individual, his humility and shyness often misunderstood as arrogance.

Stories | CWG Theme song - some facts | Must Read!

Posted by : scorpiogenius.com

People dwelling in the mystic affluent seats-of-power in South Delhi possess some unique proficiencies. They have an incandescent knack of displacing their depressing shortcomings and failures to the ones around them. We all know that for a fact, and A.R. Rahman the last person to learn the lesson the hard way.

The brewing issue is around the Anthem created for the imminent practical-joke-of-the-decade Common Wealth Games, composed by the Academy Award winning music-genius, has been panned and ridiculed by some quarters, most of the noise made by ailing politicians and organizers associated with the CWG. The media pronounced their verdict next moment the song was released and the twitter-facebook freaks also released themselves for free.

Jhootha Hi Sahi (JHS) – Lyrics
Cry Cry - Lyrics - Rashid Ali, Shreya Ghosal (lyrics)

Rote kaayko hum, hey, rote kaayko hum
Hona hai jo ho, sad hote kaayko hum

Cry cry, itna cry
Karte hain kaayko
Itna darte hain kaayko
Pal pal marte kaayko

Why why, aisa why
Waisa kyun hota
Yun hota to kya hota
Jo hota hai woh hota

Fly fly, baby fly
Dekhen aa ud ke
Dekhen baadal se jud ke
Dekhen phir na mud mud ke

Rote kaayko hum, hey, rote kaayko hum
Hona hai jo ho, sad hote kaayko hum
Haan raaton ko na sote kaayko…

Cry cry, itna cry
Karte hain kaayko
Itna darte hain kaayko
Pal pal marte kaayko

Chaar pal ka hai
Saanson ka kissa
Kitna hai hissa
Iss mein aansuon ka soch lo tum

Bachpan beeta ek
Ek boodhha sa pal
Kisne dekha kal
To iss pal ki keemat jod lo tum

Rote kayko hum, hey, rote kayko hum
Hona hai jo ho, sad hote kayko hum
Haan raaton ko na sote kayko…
Baatein…
Teri theek lagti hain Raatein …
Kyun hamaari jagti hain

Haan Laatein
Hum kyun na maarein beeti baaton ko
Bhooloon main to mujhko lagana
Tu ek chaanta
Chubh jaaye to kheench lena kaanta

No no no no no no…

Poochhun main jo tujh se kabhi Ke kyun yun daanta
Dena phir se ek aur chaanta

Kabhi nahin kabhi nahin…

Rote kaayko hum, hey, rote kaayko hum
Hona hai jo ho, sad hote kaayko hum
Haan raaton ko na sote kaayko…

Cry cry, itna cry
Karte hain kaay ko
Itna darte hain kaayko
Pal pal marte kaayko

Why why, aisa why
Waisa kyun hota
Yun hota to kya hota
Jo hota hai woh hota

I've been waiting for you - Lyrics - singer Vijay Yesudas (lyrics)
Thanks to Ali
I've been waiting for the moonlight
I've been waiting for the moonlit sky, all night
Stranger in the moonlight,
I've been waiting for a lifetime..

kabhi to aaye dabe paaon se tu mere khwabon mein
hey you, call me closer, closer to you
itne paas ke main ban jaaun teri khushboo,

sometime you come into my dreams silently
hey you, call me closer, closer to you
so close that I become your scent..

I've been waiting, waiting waiting,
for the moonlight, for you..

jaan haari, dil haare, lage mujhe jeetna ve
agan jo laagi,
har din ko nit rain chalave
to bhi to aave na kaise rab jaane ek aanch bhi-
rahe sheetal si meri rooh

lost life, lost heart, (still) i feel like (it was) winning,
the fire that broke (inside me),
every day is run by the night,
even then god knows how not even a single misfortune arises*
my soul keeps cool (calm)

I've been waiting for the moonlight
I've been waiting for the moonlit sky, all night

kyun us paar tu, kyun is kinare, tanha khada main ye schta
hoti agar tu saath ufaq** par, haath tera na chhodta
kabhi na main chhodta

why are you at that side, why am I on this side thinking
if you were there with me under the morning sky, I'd not leave your hand,
I'd never leave..

I've been waiting, waiting waiting, all my life for the moonlit sky
I've been waiting for a lifetime, for youuuuuuuuuu......

Call Me Dil - Rashid Ali
Thanks to Sandeep

Mera oh mera chehraHua mujhse anjaan kyu
Why do I look like a stranger to myself

Kaun hu main, kaun hu main
Who am I? Who am I?

Aawaz toh hai meri par kehta koi aur hai
The voice is mine, but someone else is talking

Jhoothi meri baatein aur sacha mera pyar
My talks are a lie but by love is true

Toh kya meri pehchan hai, bolo na kya naam hai
Then what truly is my identity. Say, what is my name?

Call me dil, call me baby
Call me heart, call me baby

Call mein jo naam tu, main wohi
Call me by whatever name, I’m that

Call me sach, to main sacha
Call me the truth, I am truthful

Call me chahe jhootha hi sahi
Or call may even call me a liar

Ek bas dil hai mera, tujhpe hi fida toh hai
I have just one heart, that is even ready to die for you

Kaise ye maan le ab, hone ko alvida toh hai
How can I accept that it’s time to say good bye

Ruk jaa dil diwani, pooche dil mera
My heart asks you to stay back

Kyu ye sazaa, dil toh nadaan hai
Why this punishment, my heart is just innocent

Call me dil, call me baby
Call me heart, call me baby

Call mein jo naam tu, main wohi
Call me by whatever name, I’m that

Call me sach, to main sacha
Call me the truth, I am truthful

Call me chahe jhootha hi sahi
Or call may even call me a liar
Tere dil se pehle, tootega dil mera
My heart will break before yours

Hai ye wada, hai ye wada
I promise..

Har jhooth aaine mein sacha sa lag raha hai
Every lie seems to be true when I stand in front of the mirror

Dekh le tu bhi toh ho aitbaar, ki kya meri pehchaan hai
You would believe me and come to know of the real me, if you too look at it once

Bolo na kya naam hai
Tell me, what my name is

Call me dil, call me baby
Call me heart, call me baby

Call mein jo naam tu, main wohi
Call me by whatever name, I’m that

Call me sach, to main sacha
Call me the truth, I am truthful

Call me chahe jhootha hi sahi
Or call may even call me a liar

Hello Hello - Karthik (Hindi lyrics + English Translation)
thanks to sandeep

Jhootha Hi Sahi - Helle hello I

Hello hello, hello helloIs andheri kaali raat mein koi Sune toh sunaye haale-e-dil behaal zindagi

In the dark night, someone is talking about a miserable life

Hello hello, hello helloKoi jawaab do na, jeeno ko khwaab do na
Give me an answer, give me a dream to live

Ek dost ka chehra, ya fir nakaab do na
A face of a friend, or atleast a mask of a friend

Hello hello, hello helloTelephone ki is dor se, bandhi meri zindagi
My life is tied with the lines of the telephone

Koi khol do bas tod do, main choot jau abhi
Someone open up these strings, just break them off, so that I may be free

Mujhe chod do, mujhe thaam lo
Let me off, and hold me

Kho jaane do, mera naam lo
Let me forget myself, take my name

Sab theek hai, ho jayega
Everything’s fine, (if not) everything will be fine

Is chot se ab kaam lo
Learn from this pain

Hello hello, hello hello Is andheri kaali raat mein koi Sune toh sunaye haale-e-dil behaal zindagi
In the dark night, someone is talking about a miserable life
Kaante ghadi ke chub rahe, kaatil hai ye hai adhera
The hands of the clock are piercing like thorns and the darkness is killing

Isse bache toh fir dikhe, shayad naya savera
If I’m through this, I might be able to see a new morning

Mujhse zara baatein karo, halke zara yaadein karo
Talk to me for sometime, create some memories for me

Suraj ki pehli kirano se, meri zindagi ko bharo
Let my life be filled with the first rays of the morning

Hello hello, hello helloKoi jawaab do na, jeeno ko khwaab do na
Give me an answer, give me a dream to live

Ek dost ka chehra, ya fir nakaab do na
A face of a friend, or atleast a mask of a friend

Hello hello, hello hello

nat-khat nat-khat jab naktak par kuch to churaey haey maiyya
dil churaey, neend churaey, chain churaey haey maiyya
kese main jaaoun ghar apne, sab laaj sharam main chori re
kese kahun kis nat-khat ne kiya maakkhan chori re

maiyya yashoda mori gagri se jab laa ke dil pe
makkhan haan koi di maakkhan chura le gaya
maiyya yashoda kese jaaoun ghar jab laa ke dil pe
maakkhan haan koi di maakkhan chura le gaya

mori baanh hai monhri (nat-khat re)
tere dil ko jori (nat-khat re)
more gagre koti (nat-khat re)
main moonch si choti (nat-khat re)
mori thaame kalaai uss kinaare le gaya

maiyya yashoda sach kehta hun main jab naake kul par
maakhan ki gagri se maakhan bacha le gaya
maiyya yashoda mori gagri se jab laa ke dil pe
maakkhan haan koi di maakkhan chura le gaya

suna tha ek din main ne jab naatak par chalte chalte
kisi gopi ko bethe akele rote naina dhalte dhalte
chalo phir jaa bethain us jamna ke pull par
maakkhan ham mil ke re maakkhan chata hogaya
maiyya yashoda mori gagri se jab laa ke dil pe
maakkhan haan koi di maakkhan chura le gaya

maahi mohe laaj aave kaahe main ro ro karti thi
tu hi maakkhan choori, main beth ke bas aahain bharti thi
phir tere nat-khat ne ek din mohe yeh raaz bataya (2)
chori hota tha maakkhan kiyun ke choron se darti thi
jo makkhan jam ke khaey, to kya koi churaey
to chakh le aur chakha le thora maaii
O maaii tore nat-khat ko main ne hi jab laa ke dil pe
maakkhan khilaaya to maakkhan mera hogaya

maiyya yashoda sach kehta hun main jab naake kul par
maakhan haan kori... maiyya yashoda...
O maiyya yashoda mere maiyya yashoda
maiyya yashoda sach kehta hun main jab naake kul par
maakkhan ki gagri se maakkhan bacha le gaya

kese main jaaoun ghar apne, sab laaj sharam main chori re
kese kahun kis nat-khat ne kiya maakkhan chori re
maiyya yashoda... O maiyya yashoda...
O maiyya yashoda

Do Nishaniyan - Sonu Nigam (Hindi lyrics + English Translation)

Ek dor se bandhi kaise do kahaniyaan
With one string, how two stories are tied

Ek taar se jud gayi kaise ye do zindaganiyaan
With one wire, how two lives are attached

Is phone ke saaz par, meri aawaz bhar mujhpe hansti hain khamoshiyaan
Filling my voice with the melody of the phone, silences laugh at me,

Mere chehre ki do nishaniyan
Mere chehre ki do nishaniyan
Mere chehre ki do nishaniyaan
Mere chehre ki do nishaaniyaan...

the two identities of my face,

kis ki nawazish hui rookhi si zindagi par
Whose favour has fallen upon my meaningless life,

halki si barish hui sookhi si zindagi par
like a light shower on my dry life,

hai khauf ke na chura le koi kal-
I fear someone might take away from me tomorrow

mere aasmaan se ye chori ke badal
the clouds that I have stolen from my sky,

churaye so meherbaniyaan
(and) if someone does, it'll be a kindness

mere chehre ki do nishaniyan
the two identities of my face...
maana ke naazil nahi hona tha ye farishta
I understand that this angel was not to be bestowed upon me,

maana ke haasil na hona tha humko ye rishta
I understand that we were not to get this relationship,

lage khoobsurat mujhe ab khuda tu
you look beautiful to me now o god,

farishte se mere na karna juda tu
don't separate me from my angel (now),

mita de ye badgumaniyaan
remove these suspicions..

mere chehre ki do nishaniyan..
the two identities of my face...

Ek dor se bandhi kaise do kahaniyaan
With one string, how two stories are tied

Ek taar se jud gayi kaise ye do zindaganiyaan
With one wire, how two lives are attached

Is phone ke saaz par, meri aawaz bhar mujhpe hansti hain khamoshiyaan
Filling my voice with the melody of the phone, silences laugh at me,

Mere chehre ki do nishaniyan
Mere chehre ki do nishaniyan
Mere chehre ki do nishaniyaan
Mere chehre ki do nishaaniyaan...

the two identities of my face.

Movie Reviews - 127 Hours (2010) | Movie Review - Excerpts (Updated - Sep 13)

Reviewed by Peter Debruge | variety.com (Thanks to Ejaz for sending the link)

Danny Boyle has taken us to the surface of the sun ("Sunshine") and the end of the world as we know it ("28 Days Later"), testing the limits of human endurance with each radically different project. "127 Hours" takes the adrenaline rush one step further, pitting man against nature in the most elemental of struggles as Boyle compresses the true story of rock-climbing junkie Aron Ralston, who spent five days wrestling with a boulder after a rockslide pinned his arm against a canyon wall, into an intense 93 minutes. Marketed correctly, pic should spell another hit for the high-energy helmer.

As nerve-racking as the whole predicament is, it's surprising how much humor manages to sneak in, with A.R. Rahman's Western-sounding synthpop score building from tension to ultimate triumph (with a boost from the original Dido collaboration "If I Rise"). Many will come out of sheer curiosity about Ralston's self-administered amputation (whether or not they manage to keep their eyes open during the scene itself), but the scenes that follow are even more effective, right up to the closing images of the real Ralston, still chasing the adrenaline dream.

Reviewed at Telluride Film Festival (Sneak Preview), Sept. 4, 2010. (Also in Toronto Film Festival -- Special Presentations.)

Excerpts from some more Reviews

Boyle reteams with A.R. Rahman, who won two Academy Awards for their last collaboration (Slumdog Millionaire). Rahman’s score for 127 Hours is more involved in the moments before and after Ralston became stuck in the canyon. I almost wish there were more of it, but it seems Boyle chose to play the dramatic moments more naturalistic (which is understandable). Read more  >> (Thanks to Raghavan)

Technically, Boyle is assisted by exemplary cinematography credited to both Enrique Chediak and Anthony Dod Mantle. A.R. Rahman, who famously collaborated with Boyle on "Slumdog," is back for a second go around with new songs and compositions that eloquently fit the mood (most appear to feature Dido in the vocals).  Rahaman is also pitch perfect in his score for the film's most dramatic moment, helping Boyle create the unexpectedly uplifting conclusion.  All three will be key players in their categories as awards season progresses. Read More >>   (Thanks to Anup)

My other complaint is that this really needed a proper, real score. I love A.R. Rahman (Slumdog's soundtrack is one of my all-time favorites), but it didn't work in this. It needed a more melodic, moody conventional score, but instead we get Rahman who sounds like he's experimenting with random instruments throughout the whole thing. Some of the songs in it are good and work in context, but the score was another part that I felt needed a lot of work. Read More >> (thanks to Nithyanandhan)

Although Ralston's ordeal gripped the world seven years ago, there was no guarantee that a film would do justice to the chilling true story. All of the key creative personnel contribute to the movie's nail-biting tension and unexpectedly moving finale. Jon Harris's editing is matchless, and Rahman's score effectively heightens the emotion. Ultimately, however, it is the talents of Boyle and Franco that sock this movie home. Read More >> (Thanks to Siva)

Full of visual invention that exhibits a kinetic sense of cinema, complemented by a superb score from Slumdog collaborator A.R. Rahman, Boyle has followed up one great success with another-Piers Handling . Read More >> (Thanks to Kalyan)

Meanwhile, A.R. Rahman's score and the rock-song interludes work overtime to comfort Aron and the spectator with music.Rahman's closing theme works wonders here; so does a glimpse, just before the closing credits, of the real, smiling Aron Ralston and his wife . Read More >> (Thanks to Sravan)

Stories - Do we need to defend A R Rahman?

Posted by

As a person who closely follows him and his music, I don’t think I have to try and defend his music. There’s no point. So to the question in the topic, it’s a straight answer. NO. We don’t have to defend A R Rahman in this situation. Even Rahman never defended his music by talking anything about it. He defends his music by making music and making more music. So in the wake of the CWG theme ‘fiasco’ (that’s what media says!), where the same sections of media which were praising him (which again was unwarranted and without any control!) till now, are trying to reduce him to a mere money-monger who asked Rs. 5 crores for the theme and forget to see some truths behind the man and the music. So I thought I would take a comprehensive look at his career. So, I’m sorry for such a long post.

Pre- Roja

He was mainly an advertisement jingle composer. And, since his father R K Shekhar was also a film composer, only the ones who belonged to that generation knew him. But, by proving his prowess in the ad world some people took note of him. And when Mani Ratnam was looking out for a new music composer for his new movie and since Mani’s cousin knew ARR, he was recommended for the same. Thus started a collaboration which in itself has become a landmark in the Indian Film Industry. ARR was paid Rs. 25000 for the same.

Videos - Misc | Piano by Arjun - AR Rahman's KMMC Student (who is visually challenged!)

AR Rahman on FB

Yesterday morning was one of the best that i had ever had this year. I was invited for a piano recital by students of Dr Chatterjee who teaches the piano at KMMC (he follows the Russian conservatory method ).

Most of the students had started learning to play the piano from scratch just months ago and were playing like ...they had played it all their lives.

But the highlight of the concert was a visually challenged student who started just 4 months ago. He played like a pro and was stunning....and was better than all of the others ..

God Bless!

News - AR Rahman's Commonwealth Games Theme Song | Celebrities Talking (Updated Sep 05)

Posted by TOI

AR Rahman's anthem for the Commonwealth Games hasn't gone down well with both fans and politicians. While the song's online popularity is nowhere near that of Shakira's " Waka Waka", which he famously claimed his tune would surpass, politicians and Games officials now want the 5 crore-track "recomposed".

"Swagatham" aka "Jiyo Utho Heyo" which critics say has neither the pace nor the punch of "Waka Waka", or the rousing quality of "Maa Tujhe Salaam", has disappointed. Ever since he posted links to the tracks on his social networking pages, Rahman has been flooded with unsavoury comments. The games committee's unhappy too. Vijaykumar Malhotra, board member of the organising committee (OC) claimed, "We expected a better song from Rahman." Former sports minister Shahnawaz Hussain said, "I respect Rahman for what he has achieved but the track simply does not excite me. No one in the OC likes it except perhaps Suresh Kalmadi." Hussain demanded a re-composition after Lalit Bhanot, organising secretary of the games, insisted that people would begin liking "Swagatham" if they keep listening to it. "Either it's good music or bad. There's no middle way to evaluate the appeal of a 5 crore track, he can surely re-compose it," he said.
